Safety and traffic improvements on Route 221 underway, public contribution requested

Officials are working to make Route 221 safer and improve traffic along busier stretches of that road.

Officials said between 24,000 and 27,000 cars travel up and down this road every day.

The Central Virginia Transportation Planning Organization (CVTPO) wants to help improve the 221 corridor, so they just launched a survey to get your input.

We spoke to a driver who says this highway is always congested.

“You definitely have to wait a couple of light cycles to be able to pull out on the road,” said Bo Weissenfluh.

The investigation focuses on the sections of 221 between Perrowville Road and Thomas Jefferson Road, from Ambassador Road to Cloverhill Blvd, and Enterprise Drive to Graves Mill Road.

According to officials, there have been hundreds of crashes in these areas from 2018 to 2023. The goal of this investigation is to prevent more accidents.

“That planning document that’s going to put out here is what’s happening in this corridor, here’s what we’re seeing, the accidents. Here’s the data, here’s what we heard from the public, here’s our recommendations,” said Kelly Hitchcock with CVTPO .

She also said one change could be to make the area more walkable.

“It’s about what you experience now but also what you want this corridor to be in the future,” Hitchcock said.
