Las Vegas Raiders ripped for 1 hugely confusing offseason decision

The Las Vegas Raiders experienced a resurgence in the latter part of the 2023 season, following the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels.

Interim head coach Antonio Pierce revitalized the team and received strong support from the players who urged the organization to avoid repeating past mistakes, such as those made with former interim coach Rich Bisaccia. This time, Raiders management followed the players’ advice and promoted Pierce to the permanent position of head coach.

While this decision was a positive step for the franchise, some of their other offseason moves in 2024 have been met with skepticism.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report pointed out one particular area of concern: the quarterback situation.

The Las Vegas Raiders ripped for this confusing offseason decision

According to Gagnon, the Las Vegas Raiders’ handling of the quarterback position could lead to future regrets. Although the team had a need at quarterback heading into the offseason, they did nothing to really impact the position.

Here’s what Gagnon had to say about the decisions the Las Vegas Raiders made at quarterback.

“The Raiders are otherwise pretty talented, but instead of investing in draft or market moves to land a quarterback with an elite cap, they went super conservative at the sport’s most critical position.”

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Raiders had the 13th overall pick, but six quarterbacks were already off the board by then. Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins and Russell Wilson found new teams in free agency, and Justin Fields was traded by the Chicago Bears.

Instead of making a bold move, the Raiders signed Gardner Minshew.

Minshew, known for his stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts, has had some memorable moments, but it’s debatable how much of an upgrade he is compared to Aidan O’Connell, their 2023 fourth-round pick.

Further complicating matters, the Raiders used their 13th pick on Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, a highly-rated prospect but one they probably didn’t need. The team had already invested a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on tight end Michael Mayer, creating a two-player deadlock at the position.

Additionally, Gagnon criticized the Raiders’ decision to sign defensive tackle Christian Wilkins to a significant contract.

Despite that criticism, Wilkins, known for his durability and coming off a career-best season, has the potential to be a significant force alongside Maxx Crosby on the defensive line.

It will be interesting to see what the 2024 season has in store for the Las Vegas Raiders, especially at the quarterback position.
